Becoming a Mathematics Teacher (K-8) - A Mathematical Romance
In the November 2004 issue of Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School , NCTM.
I recommend this to anyone who needs revitalizing ideas for turning mathematics activities into the joyful experiences they should be, but especially to those who engage with other teachers, novice or experienced, in thoughtful conversations about teaching and learning mathematics. ... I recently used "Making Ten," from the section on number, with seventh graders. This activity allows students to construct their own understanding of number relationships in a way that leads to higher levels of application. "Making Ten" helps avoid the misconceptions that students commonly develop about equations and equality and naturally extends toward the concepts of negaive integers and graphing of linear relationships. The students enjoyed the surprising results that emerged as the graphed the addends.

This textbook ... will give ... teachers a good basis for teaching students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The author covers many major strands in mathematics and gives excellent examples of how to teach each strand. He focuses on higher-level thinking skills and non-traditional methods and gives justifications for teaching in this fashion. He also encourages teachers to let students share their methods or strategies for solving problems, and he emphasizes understanding over memorization. ... The author's love of mathematics rings througout the text. I particularly like the quotes he offers from mathematicians that reveal their reasons for loving mathematics. ... The book includes many activities for various grade levels. ... I especially like the activities on the CD-ROM that require students to think and solve. ... I enjoyed the book and found it to be informative, exciting, and, best of all, non-traditional.
